Command palette
One prompt for navigation, queries, scripts and toggles, with a listener the platform cannot swallow.
Opening it
/ on any ServiceNow page, outside a field. That is the only key: CtrlShiftP no longer
opens it, and AltShiftP is the panel's pause of Auto-Insert.
The in-page listener sits in the capture phase, so it sees the keystroke before the platform's handlers do, and in every frame, so a list inside an iframe still opens the palette in the top window.
Focus or Floating
Settings, Palette, chooses how it opens. The same choice is on the Manage page, and it travels with your profile.
- Focus, the default, opens it centred over a dimmed page.
- Floating opens a small window in the top-left corner and leaves the page as it is. Drag its bar to move it, drag its bottom-right corner to resize it, and it opens next time where you left it, at the size you left it. The × closes it, and so do Esc and a click anywhere on the page outside it.
Two browser shortcuts
| Shortcut | Does |
|---|---|
| AltShiftN | Show or hide technical field names, the same as /tn |
| AltShiftD | Turn dark mode on or off, the same as /tt |
They are declared as browser commands, which survive keys ServiceNow swallows and appear in the browser's shortcuts page where you can rebind them. Whether a browser assigns the suggested key is its own call: see keyboard.
A few commands
tt toggle the dark theme
tn toggle technical field names
sysid copy the current record's sys_id
xml open the record's XML
versions list the versions of this record
bg run a background script
me who am I on this instance
Type a table name to open its list, or a partial module name to jump to it. The navigator menu is resolved from the platform's own API, so what you can reach in the palette is what you can reach in the application navigator.
Your own commands
/newcmd opens a form to make one: a name, and the list, page or command it opens. It can take
what you type after it, /inc 10042, and read the record you are on. See
custom commands.
Running a background script
bg takes a script and runs it through the platform's own background-script path, which
means it needs the same admin that path always needed. The palette does not escalate
anything; it removes the detour.
Output comes back into the panel instead of a streaming page that leaves the record you were looking at.
