Attachments and versions

Reading every attachment of a record in one place, checking and fixing a data file, the version history of a record, and who a highlighted name belongs to.

Three things on a classic form that the platform makes you leave the page for.

The attachment viewer

An eye before Manage Attachments opens every attachment of the record in an overlay over the page. It is hidden when the record has none, and comes back when one is uploaded.

The list has a filter, sorting, a gallery for images, and duplicates found by content rather than by name. Select several at once, and open, download, copy a link to, rename or delete them.

A text file opens in the same editor as the rest of the extension, with highlighting for XML, JSON, JavaScript, CSS, SQL, logs and CSV: find, folding (XML without indentation too), word wrap, pretty-printing for XML and JSON, and a summary of a log. A large file is read up to 64 MB, never whole.

The viewer asks the extension's worker for the files, and the worker answers only that viewer, and only for the record it was opened on.

The data check

Pro. The check reads a CSV, XML, JSON or .xlsx file and marks what is broken, with a squiggle in the editor and a list that jumps to each one.

For a CSV it traces a column that slid sideways by the type each column holds. For an .xlsx it checks the zip, its checksums and the sheet XML. In CSV, XML and JSON it also reports invisible characters: zero-width characters, text-direction controls, control characters, and spaces that only look like spaces. The editor highlights them.

The auto fixer

Pro. For a CSV, XML or JSON file, the fixer offers a list of repairs. The safe ones are ticked, and the guesses are not. A diff shows the result before anything is written.

Replace uploads the fixed file under the same name, and deletes the original only once the upload is in. Undo puts the original back.

A CSV as a sheet

Pro. A CSV attachment opens as a table, with Excel-style filters on each column, sorting that knows a number from a date, and search. Only the rows on screen are drawn, so a long file stays quick.

Versions

On a classic form without the Versions related list, Versions (N) appears under Related Links, only when the record has versions. It opens a viewer over the page: every version, newest first; the fields that changed against the one before, or against any other you pick; a side-by-side diff of the chosen field; and the stored payload as XML.

Who is this user

Highlight a name, a login, an email address or a sys_id on an instance page, and the toolbar popup answers with that user: state, login, email, title, department, location, manager, last login, time zone and sys_id, with buttons to open the record or impersonate.

The same selection adds one item to the browser's own right-click menu, which opens that card as a drawer in the page. Two capitalised words look like a name to it, so the item sometimes appears for a phrase that is not one. The card says when nobody matched.

The card is for reading. Nothing on it reaches the assistant, the chat or any server of ours.
